Just at the turn of the year I published a post about the evoPOWER Camo test boots – the teaser boots being tested by non-other than Cesc Fabregas, Marco Reus, and Mario Balotelli. But a couple of weeks ago, Puma held a launch party for the evoPOWER, and the boots were put through their paces at an event in Barcelona.
Before I shed some light on the launch event, let’s take some time to discuss the evoPOWER boots, and just what kind of player would get the most from wearing them. Firstly, everything about the evoPOWER screams efficiency. If you’re a runner, you may have heard of barefoot running, which is all about getting the runner to run in the most natural way possible. Naturally, it would also make sense for brands like Puma to design cleats which would maximize a soccer player’s output during a game. With this being said, the evoPOWER is designed to compliment a player’s natural kicking ability, which in turn would have an impact on accuracy and power.
If you’ve played soccer since an early age, you may remember your coach getting your group to play barefoot soccer to emphasize the correct technique when striking a soccer ball, also known as not striking the ball with your toe – ouch!
Studies show that a bare foot generates a more powerful kick than a booted foot through non-restricted flexibility. However, players experience a loss of control and accuracy over the ball due to the natural contours of the foot. evoPOWER features the Gradual Stability Frame (GSF) which is an innovative spine in the sole plate that allows the boot to bend both ways, enabling the boot’s movement to be as close as possible to the biomechanics of the bare foot and replicate its natural power. This is further enhanced through the Adap-Lite special upper that only stretches vertically. Control and accuracy are improved through AccuFoam insert located on the upper which, upon impact, creates a smooth and flat kicking surface.
Puma has always been a brand that encourages feedback, and it looks like players such as Fabregas and Reus provided just that. If you’re a player that plays in that central midfield role, and likes to shoot from distance, it may be that the evoPOWER boots may be just what you’re looking for.
evoPOWER Launch Party
At the launch party, Puma athletes spoke about the boots, and competed to see who had the most powerful and accurate strike. I’ve included some images from the evoPOWER launch party below, as well as a video so you can see the boots and the players in action.
